Moderna Vaccine Service Opens for Autoimmune Patients, Here’s How to Register!

For those who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 because they have comorbidities (comorbidities) or have autoimmune diseases, they can actually be vaccinated. The Moderna Covid-19 vaccine has been declared safe by the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) for autoimmune and comorbid patients.

The Ministry of Health recommends people with autoimmune diseases to choose the Covid-19 vaccine) platform mRNA technologies such as Moderna and Pfizer. Both vaccines have been used for the national Covid-19 vaccination program. The Spokesperson for Covid-19 Vaccination from the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that actually autoimmune patients can receive any type of vaccine provided that their condition is well controlled, as evidenced by a letter of recommendation from a doctor.

Previously, the Moderna vaccine, which is a vaccine made from viral mRNA, has already pocketed a recommendation letter from BPOM or called Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) since early July 2021. This vaccine is used with indications for the prevention of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 for people aged 18 years and over.

Get to know Moderna Vaccines

The results of a joint study between the Expert Team of the National Committee for Assessing the COVID-19 Vaccine and Indonesia Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI) related to the safety and efficacy of this vaccine showed that in general the safety of this vaccine can be tolerated, both local and systemic reactions with severity grades 1 and 2.

While for efficacy data, based on phase 3 clinical trial data on November 21, 2020, the efficacy of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to prevent severe COVID-19 was 94.1% in the age group 18 to under 65 years and 86.4% in the age group 65 years and over. These results were obtained through observations starting on the 14th day after the second injection.

There are a number of side effects of the Moderna vaccine, but in general the Moderna vaccine is safe and the most common side effects arising from the use of this vaccine include pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, and chills. These complaints are usually felt after the injection of the second dose of vaccine, especially at the age of 65 years and over.

The Moderna vaccine is currently indicated for ages 18 years and over. The vaccine is given by intramuscular injection, a dose of 0.5 mL with 2 injections within a period of 1 (one) month.

Moderna Vaccine for Autoimmune Patients

Before being permitted by the Ministry of Health, people with autoimmune disease were one of the groups at risk if they received the vaccine. Though there are many people with autoimmune, with different types of autoimmune. There are at least more than 80 types of autoimmune, and the most well-known are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, hemolytic anemia, to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism due to autoimmune.

According to Siti Nadia Tarmizi, only mRNA vaccines are allowed for autoimmune patients, namely Pfizer and Moderna. Indonesia has brought in as many as 8,000,160 doses of Moderna vaccine, and most of it is used for booster or injection of the third dose of vaccine for health workers.

However, there is no need to worry as there are 5,102,300 doses of Moderna vaccine that have been allocated to the general public. Meanwhile, Pfizer is scheduled to arrive shortly with 1,560,780 doses. It is not yet known who the Pfizer vaccine will be allocated to.

Where to Get Moderna Vaccines?

Moderna vaccines for autoimmune patients can be obtained at DKI Jakarta health facilities, but only for those who carry the original DKI Jakarta ID card, or an official domicile letter issued by the local RT.

Autoimmune sufferers who want to participate in this vaccine program can register as soon as possible because the quota is limited. The time for vaccination is from 08.00 WIB in the morning to 12.00 WIB in the afternoon. Of course, bring a certificate from your doctor, which states that you or your family who have autoimmune diseases deserve to be vaccinated.

When is it available for 12-17 year olds?

Dr. Adam Prabata through his Instagram account @adamprabata, last August 12, said that the latest research shows that the Moderna vaccine that has entered Indonesia has proven to be effective, safe, and able to produce antibodies against Covid-19 for children aged 12-17 years.

Moderna vaccine efficacy for children aged 12-17 years reaches 100% in preventing symptomatic Covid-19 and 92.7-93.3% in preventing symptomatic Covid-19 if using the Covid-19 criteria from the CDC.

There were no serious side effects found after the child was vaccinated, only mild side effects in the form of pain at the injection site, headache, and fatigue. However, be patient! Currently, there is no recommendation for Moderna vaccine for use in children aged 12-17 years in Indonesia.

However, with the results of this study, and perhaps after research has been carried out on Indonesian children aged 12-17 years, it is hoped that a license to use the Moderna vaccine will be issued for children aged 12-17 years.

For information, the Healthy Gang, since June 2021, BPOM has issued EUA for 4 (four) types of vaccines to be used in handling COVID-19 in Indonesia. The four vaccines are CoronaVac, the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Bio Farma, AstraZeneca Vaccine and Sinopharm Vaccine.

The Moderna Covid-19 vaccine is the first vaccine from development using an mRNA platform that obtained EUA from the POM. Indonesia received the Moderna vaccine from the assistance of the United States Government, which was distributed through the COVAX facility scheme.

In addition to vaccines, the Head of the POM Agency appealed to the public to always enforce health protocols as a key effort in breaking the chain of spread of COVID-19. In addition, the public is also asked to be wise and careful in consuming drugs used in handling COVID-19, and not to be easily influenced by the promotion of medicinal products, traditional medicines and health supplements with claims that they can prevent or treat COVID-19.
