Vaginal discharge before menstruation

Vaginal discharge before menstruation is a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Hormones play a role in the color and texture of vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge as a sign of menstruation is generally about a teaspoon in volume with a texture that is not too thick or thin, odorless, and the color can change from white to clear and then brown.

Vaginal discharge that occurs before menstruation is known as leukorrhea. This vaginal discharge contains cells secreted from the vagina, and may sometimes look slightly yellow.

This part of the menstrual cycle is called the luteal phase. That’s when the hormone progesterone peaks in your body. When estrogen is dominant, vaginal discharge tends to be clearer and watery. Progesterone, on the other hand, turns mucus cloudy or white.

You can use vaginal discharge as a way to track your fertile period, and it can be a natural family planning strategy. During the fertile period, avoid unprotected sex, for couples who want to prevent pregnancy. Conversely, for married couples who are trying to get pregnant, it is recommended to have sex during the fertile period.

Thin and liquid mucus is very typical as a sign of the release of an egg or ovulation. While thick and white vaginal discharge is considered as cervical mucus in the infertile period.

Differences in Vaginal Menstruation or Pregnancy

Vaginal discharge can also be an early sign of pregnancy. Vaginal discharge in early pregnancy may be difficult to distinguish from vaginal discharge that is part of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. Generally, vaginal discharge that is a sign of pregnancy is characterized by thicker and thicker vaginal mucus than “normal” vaginal discharge.

Another thing that is difficult to distinguish is the presence of blood spots or brown discharge, which can be a sign of menstrual blood, or blood spots due to implantation in early pregnancy.

So the best way to determine whether the vaginal discharge you are experiencing is vaginal discharge when you are menstruating or pregnant, do a pregnancy test. If you have missed your period and you have spotting in your vaginal discharge, it’s a good idea to do a home pregnancy test. If the result is negative, it is possible that brown spots in the vaginal discharge are the start of menstrual blood.

When to see a doctor?

Vaginal discharge is normal and is the body’s natural defense mechanism against the vagina. Vaginal discharge before menstruation is also completely normal. However, if vaginal discharge is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain in the vaginal area, very thick and yellowish discharge, a fishy or foul smell, and itching and irritation, then it is likely a yeast infection or candidiasis.

You don’t have to take into account whether you experience vaginal discharge before your period or you are too late for your period when you get it, immediately check with a doctor for treatment. This is because vaginal discharge during pregnancy can be harmful to the fetus, so it must be treated immediately.
