These apps promote themselves as crypto mining apps that can help users make huge profits by investing in cloud mining businesses, where they will receive a certain amount of cryptocurrency.

However, once installed, these apps only show ads and trick users into paying $15 per month for a subscription service. In addition, the application also further enhances the capabilities of fake mining. There are eight apps designated as dangerous by TrendMicro, they are:

  • BitFunds – Crypto Cloud Mining
  • Bitcoin Miner – Cloud Mining
  • Bitcoin (BTC) – Pool Mining Cloud Wallet
  • Crypto Holic – Bitcoin Cloud Mining
  • Daily Bitcoin Rewards – Cloud Based Mining System
  • Bitcoin 2021
  • MineBit Pro – Crypto Cloud Mining & btc miner
  • Ethereum (ETH) – Pool Mining Cloud

Even though these applications are no longer in the Play Store, users who have already installed them must delete them manually on their cellphones.

Launching Phone Arena, Wednesday, August 25, 2021, some of the applications above, namely Crypto Holic – Bitcoin Cloud Mining and Daily Bitcoin Rewards – Cloud Based Mining, are paid applications with prices of $12.99 and $5.99, respectively.

Of the eight apps removed from the Play Store by Google, one, BitFunds – Crypto Cloud Mining, has been downloaded more than 100,000 times.

In addition to the eight applications above, a large number of similar applications remain in the Play Store. Trend Micro Mobile App Reputation Service (MARS) data reveals that there are more than 120 fake cryptocurrency apps still online. This app has absolutely no cryptocurrency mining capabilities and instead tricks users into watching ads.

To avoid fake crypto apps, TrendMicro also includes some helpful tips in its report. Tip number one on the list is for users to always check the comments left by other users. If an app gets a lot of negative comments, then it can be suspected of being a scam app.
