Add one more animal infected with Covid-19, the white-tailed deer in America!

The list of animals affected by Covid-19 is growing again. This time it’s a deer in America. The United States government confirmed on Friday, August 27, 2021.

The type of deer that has contracted Covid-19 is a white-tailed wild deer in the State of Ohio. There are no reports that the deer show any signs of infection. This is reported by the US Department of Agriculture, USDA.

“We don’t yet know how deer can be exposed to SARS-CoV-2,” wrote Lyndsay Cole as USDA spokesman, , by email to Reuters.

“It could be that they are exposed through humans, the environment, other deer or other animal species,” Cole continued.

In July, the USDA reported that white-tailed wild deer populations in Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania had SARS-CoV-2.

This is based on a study that analyzed serum samples from roaming deer for COVID-19 antibodies.

Samples from deer infected in Ohio from January to March were collected by the Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. The USDA said the sample was part of a number of ongoing studies.

In a written statement that the samples were suspected to be positive for COVID-19 in university testing. The case was confirmed by the USDA National Animal Laboratory Service.

Other animals affected by Covid-19

Previously, the USDA reported that several other animals had contracted Covid-19. Such as dogs, cats, tigers, lions, leopards, otters, gorillas and minks.

According to the USDA, the vast majority of infected animals worldwide are in species that have had close contact with humans with COVID-19.
