Crazybola.com – The Chelsea manager and captain have been unanimous in criticizing referee Anthony Taylor’s harsh decision to give Reece James a double penalty and a red card during the draw with Liverpool.
Thomas Tuchel and Cesar Azpilicueta both criticized the referee’s decision to send off Reece James in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday (28/8), questioning why the referee was so quick to assess the incident and make a decision.
The Blues took the lead through Kai Havertz’s header and looked very dangerous in attack, but the game turned around just before half-time when Reece James was judged for a deliberate handball to prevent Sadio Mane’s goal.
Referee Anthony Taylor initially missed the incident but on the recommendation of VAR he later watched the replay and immediately decided to award a penalty and a red card, leading manager Thomas Tuchel to question how quickly the pitch referee assessed the incident and made a decision.
“I don’t know anymore what happened and what didn’t happen. We’re just a little worried he just saw the photo and it gives a clear picture that it’s a red card and a penalty,” said Thomas Tuchel. Sky Sports. “For me it was too soon, I would have wished for a longer examination. I remember the referee explained to us that if it was a deflection and it wasn’t a very unnatural arm position then it wasn’t a penalty.
While talking to BBC Sport, Team captain Cesar Azpilicueta also criticized referee Anthony Taylor’s harsh decision to give two big penalties at once while the Spanish defender also gave support to Reece James.
“It was a tough decision,” he said. “I feel sorry for Reece. The referee got advice from VAR to give it. He went to the screen to watch a rerun and made his decision. We got a double penalty, a red card and a penalty – and two yellow cards in the same game. We are really angry.”
