Knowing the procedure for praying repentance and the intention of praying repentance is something that needs to be known. Quoting from the book Complete Prayer Guidelines and Guidance by Abu MashhadThe scholars have agreed that repenting or regretting a sin is obligatory. For that, it must be done immediately.
One way to ask forgiveness of repentance from Allah SWT is to perform the sunnah prayer of repentance. Like other worship, there are also procedures for repentance prayers according to the Sunnah of the Prophet so that their implementation is perfect. Then, what is the reading of the intention to pray repentance and how to do it?
Humans are in the wrong place and make mistakes
Mistakes or sins have become commonplace for humans. Like food that is consumed every day, wrong and sin cannot be separated from human life. Is it a sin against Allah SWT, a sin against a fellow human being, or maybe a sin against the surrounding environment.
All these things have been done by humans. That is why there is no perfect human on this earth. In fact, even a prophet has made mistakes, even though these mistakes are a lesson for his people.
The Commandment to Repent for Humans
The scholars are of the same opinion that if a servant commits a sin or mistake, then he should repent. The repentance that must be done must be nasuha repentance, which is pure and sincere repentance asking for forgiveness from Allah SWT.
In repentance must also include the following:
- Must break away and stay away from the sin committed
- Really regret the deed
- Seriously intend because of Allah SWT that he will not repeat the sin forever
The command to repent for humans has been mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith. Some of the words of Allah SWT in the Qur’an regarding the command to repent, among others:
1. Surah An-Nur Verse 31
Allah SWT says:
“And repent all of you to Allah, O you who believe, that you may be successful.” (Surat an-Nur: 31)
2. Surah At-Tahrim Verse 8
“O you who believe, repent to Allah with repentance nasuhaa (repentance that is pure). Hopefully your Lord will cover your mistakes and enter you into Jannah under which rivers flow.” (Surat At-Tahrim: 8)
3. Hadith of Muslim History
The Prophet Muhammad SAW said:
الْأَغَرِّ ارٍ اَلْمُزَنِيِّ اللّٰهُ لَ اللَّهِ لَّى اللَّهُ لَيْهِ لَّمَ الَ ا ا النَّاسُ ا لَى اللَّهِ أَتُوبُ الْيَوْمِ لَيْهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ
From Al Aghar bin Yasar al Muzaniy ra., that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: ‘O people, repent to Allah, for I repent a hundred times a day.’ (HR. Muslim, Number 2702)
4. Hadith History Tirmidhi
From Ibn Umar ra., that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam, said: “Verily Allah will accept the repentance of a servant as long as his life has not reached his throat.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi number 3847 and Imam Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban Hasan)
Sunnah prayer of repentance
In addition to regretting the sins that have been committed, we are encouraged to complete repentance by performing the sunnah prayer of repentance. The following are the intentions and procedures for doing so.
1. The intention of the prayer of repentance
Ushollii sunnatat taubati rok’ataini lillaahi ta’alaa
“I intend to perform the sunnah prayer of repentance of two rak’ahs for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.“
2. Procedures for Performing the Sunnah Prayer of Repentance
Performing the sunnah prayer of repentance is almost by doing the fard (obligatory) prayer or other sunnah prayers. The only difference is intention and prayer.
The repentance prayer consists of two rak’ahs with one greeting. However, this prayer can also be done in two, four, and six cycles. Before performing the sunnah prayer of repentance, make sure your body is pure from large and small hadast. In addition, it covers the genitals perfectly.
The procedure for performing the sunnah prayer of repentance is as follows.
- Saying intentions (can be said in the heart and orally)
- Takbiratul Ihram
- Reading the iftitah prayer (sunnah)
- Reading Al-Fatihah
- Then Read a short selected Surah of the Qur’an
- Sitting between the two prostrations
- Second prostration
- Stand up to continue the second rakat
- FReading Al-Fatihah
- Read the selected short surahs of the Koran
- Sitting between the two prostrations
- Second prostration
- Final Tasyahud
- Say greetings
- Pray for forgiveness
3. Prayer Prayer Sunnah Repentance
After completing the repentance prayer, it is continued by reading special prayers asking for forgiveness from Allah SWT.
The following is the pronunciation of the prayer of repentance:
اَللَّهُمَّ لَا لٰـهَ لاَّ لَقْتَنِيْ ا ، ا لَى ا اسْتَطَعْتُ شَرِّ ا لَ لَيَّ ا ل ا ل لَّ
“O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I have made an agreement to obey You and Your promise of recompense according to my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evils of my actions. , I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I confess my sins to You, so forgive me. For no one can forgive sins except You.”
“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, surely we will be among the losers.”
“O Allah, forgive me and accept my repentance, indeed You are the most accepting of repentance and the most merciful.”
Then close by reading:
اَللَّهُمَّ لَا لَهَ لَّا خَلَقْتَنِيْ ا ا لَى ا اسْتَطَعْتُ. ا . لَكَ لَيَّ. . اغْفِرْ لِيْ لَا الذُّنُوْبَ لَّا
Allâhumma anta rabbî, lâ ilâha illâ anta khalaqtanî. Wa anâ ‘abduka, wa anâ ‘alâ ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastatha’tu. A’ûdzu bika min syarri mâ shana’tu. Abû’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya. Wa abû’u bidzanb. Faghfirlî. Fa innahû lâ yaghfirudz dzunûba illâ anta.
“O my Lord, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me. I am Your servant. I am under the command of faith according to Your covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have committed. To You, I admit all Your favors to me. I admit my sins. So forgive my sins. Truly no one forgives sins except You,” (See Sayid Uthman bin Yahya, Maslakul Akhyar, Prints of Al-‘Aidrus, Jakarta).
4. Time for the Sunnah Prayer of Repentance
The sunnah prayer of repentance can actually be done at any time, day or night. However, there are some scholars who argue that the sunnah prayer of repentance would be better done at the third of the night or the time of tahajjud.
Although the repentance prayer may be performed during the day or night, it is not permissible to perform the repentance prayer at times that are forbidden for prayer, namely:
- When the sun rises until the sun rises halfway
- When the sun is right in the middle so it looks tilted
- Starting from Asr prayer until sunset
- Towards sunset until it is really perfect sunset.
That is the intention, procedure, prayer, and time of the sunnah prayer of repentance. Repenting should not be delayed while we are still given the opportunity to do so. Hopefully this article is useful for us, yes!
