“That beautiful moment must be disturbed by defeat”

1NEWS – Football manager in Paraguay, asked his girlfriend to marry him before his team got into action last weekend.

Celso Rafael Ayala tried his luck by proposing to Lili Benitez and the 51-year-old enlisted the help of his River Plate Asuncion players before kick off – but the special day was marred when ‘Chito’ team were beaten 5-1 in their clash against Guarani.

Chito arranged his players in rows on the pitch before the first whistle, with the squad brandishing letters that read ‘Lili, marry me.’

She then waited beside her daughter when her boyfriend was brought to the field and she burst into tears when she saw the question.

Ayala, who once played for River Plate in Argentina, then knelt down and asked a very important question, and his acceptance was captured by Tigo Sports cameras.

His squad congratulated him before they refocused on the match.

River Plate Asuncion host Guarani in an important match in Paraguay’s Primera Division.

The home side are third going into the clash with the visitors, Guarani top of the table. And Chito’s team trailed 3-0 after 45 minutes and ended up losing 5-1 to their title rivals.

River Plate Asuncion are still third in the Paraguayan First Division after the game, but are six points adrift of Fernando Jubero’s Guarani.

Ayala’s successful playing career

But the former Paraguay international centre-back won’t care, and he himself has fond memories of the weekend despite losing 5-1. The man who is familiarly called Chito has played 53 times for his country between 1993 and 2003, and even spent the 1999/2000 season at La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

He also played 200 times for Argentine side River Plate in two spells, and won the Copa Libertadores trophy in 1996.
