Playing under a pitch covered in roofs to escape the rain, Halep clinched the win after struggling this year with injury. Finally, the owner of the two grand slam titles withdrew from the second round of the 2021 Cincinnati Masters against Jesica Pegula in Ohio, USA, last August 19.

“I was a bit lucky to play with a roofed (field),” said Halep as quoted from BBC.

Next, Halep will compete against the winner between tennis player from Kazakhstan, Elena Rybakina, and athlete from France, Caroline Garcia. As for Rybakina, she will face Garcia shortly after this article is revealed.

In another match, defending champion from Japan, Naomi Osaka, advanced to the third round without a match. Osaka won after her Serbian opponent, Olga Danilovic, withdrew an hour before the match for medical reasons.

On Friday (3/9), Osaka will face Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez and Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. The 23-year-old is also on his way to a third US Open title in four years.

This year’s US Open is Osaka’s first since withdrawing from the French Open and Wimbledon in May-June. At the same time, it is a place to find a revival for Osaka after failing to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, last July-August.

Meanwhile, former world number one tennis player from Spain, Garbine Muguruza, also still maintains her chances by defeating tennis player from Spain, Andrea Petkovic. Muguruza beat Petkovic for the third round ticket with a score of 6-4 and 6-2.

The same success was also achieved by the young Canadian 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu. The tennis player who was born on June 16, 2000, won over a tennis player from Switzerland, Viktorija Golubic, in a three-set match with a score of 7-5, 4-6, and 7-5.[]
