During Tuesday’s rally, a mass of Taliban supporters also paraded coffins covered with French and British flags along the street through the crowds.
Some in the crowd held their guns aloft, while others waved Taliban flags or recorded the procession on their cell phones.
“August 31 is our official Freedom Day. On this day, American occupying forces and NATO forces left Afghanistan,” Taliban official Qari Saeed Khosti told local television station Zhman TV during coverage of the event.
Footage of Khost was widely shared on social media on Tuesday along with videos of other celebratory shots in the capital Kabul. In addition, there is a video showing a man hanging from a US-made Black Hawk helicopter circling over the city of Khandahar. Reuters was unable to verify all of the videos.
The last US troops boarded the last flight from Afghanistan one minute before midnight on Monday (30/8). Their departure ended the chaotic evacuation of 123,000 civilians from Afghanistan.
