“Why are players like Ziyech not called up to the national team? This is the answer.”

1NEWS – How could a player who helped Chelsea win the Champions League last season was ignored by the national team in an international match like the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers earlier this month? The answer lies with Hakim Ziyech and Morocco.

Ziyech has recorded 41 caps for Morocco since making his international debut in 2015. However, his last appearance came in a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso, 12 June 2021. The former Ajax Amsterdam man also came off the bench in a 1-0 win against Ghana, four days before

Uniquely, Ziyech was not included in Vahid Halilhodzic’s squad for this time’s World Cup qualifiers, against Sudan and Guinea. This is strange and provokes questions from fans.

On this matter, Halilhodzic has explained to the public why he left Ziyech. The coach from Bosnia-Herzegovina who has a French passport revealed that Ziyech’s behavior did not meet the standards applied. It happened when the 28-year-old appeared in the last international match.

“His behavior in the last two matches (against Burkina Faso and Ghana), especially the last one, did not show a national team player. Because, as a leader in the team, you must be a positive role model,” said Halilhodzic, reported by goal.com.

“He came late. He even refused to work. There was no point in discussing it after that. For me, the national team is above all. Nobody can hold him hostage,” added the former Ivory Coast coach.

Halilhodzic claims Ziyech initially feigned an injury to come out of the match against Ghana and then refused to warm up when asked to come on in the second half. For Halilhodzic, it was enough to show his disapproval after being appointed as a substitute.

“For the first time in my coaching career, I saw disappointing behavior. A player who refused to play in a friendly, citing injury,” said Halilhodzic.

“The medical staff did some checks and said he could play. He then refused to warm up in the second half because he was disappointed to be a substitute. For me, that kind of behavior is unacceptable. You can’t cheat with the national team. You are 100% available or not. ,” added Halilhodzic.

For Morocco, Ziyech’s problem this time is not the first. He had a similar incident in 2017, when the then head coach, Herve Renard, left him out of the Africa Cup of Nations squad due to a poor attitude in training.

Ziyech was then exiled from the international stage for more than a year before being called up again ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
