The 21st European Union Film Festival, Europe on Screen (EOS) is back on line from 15-27 September 2021 via the website. This festival will present the latest 54 films: 53 films from 25 countries in Europe as well as 1 compilation of Indonesian short films that won the EOS Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP) 2020. All films can be watched for free and easily accessed by audiences in various regions in Indonesia. Indonesia. “Last year was the first time Europe on Screen was held virtually and the result was a huge success despite the various obstacles related to the pandemic. For the second time, we will hold the 21st edition this year virtually but still maintain the quality of the festival by presenting many quality films and filmmakers. We are very happy and ready to show the best European cinema to audiences throughout Indonesia,” said Margus Solnson, Ad Interim Charge d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Indonesia.

“The audience’s enthusiasm for European film festivals and films continues to grow every year, even when Europe on Screen has to change the format of its implementation to virtual or online since the pandemic came last year,” said EOS Festival Co-Director Nauval Yazid, in a press conference. “This year, we are also opening up opportunities for film students and the general public to join and learn about the film industry in the Road to EOS 2021 program, both through virtual workshops and Instagram Live sessions,” continued the EOS Festival Co-Director. The festival will open on September 15, 2021 with a touching family film from Finland, Any Day Now, by director Hamy Ramezan. The festival will conclude on September 27, 2021, closing with a blazing musical documentary from Italy, We Are the Thousand, made by director Anita Rivaroli.

EOS support for the Indonesian film industry and young filmmakers continues through the Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP), a funding program for making short films for budding filmmakers. EOS SFPP which has been running since 2018 has produced quality short films that have been screened at various short film festivals at home and abroad. For the 2021 SFPP, the number of registrants far exceeded expectations and came from various parts of Indonesia. At EOS 2021, 9 contestants were selected to present, or pitch, their short film story ideas before a jury consisting of professional filmmakers. Three winners will receive funding prizes for the making of their short film.


The following are the 9 titles of the selected proposals to be presented in the 2021 EOS SFPP program:

  3. Frikadeller, Bandung
  4. Rama Rhythm, Surabaya
  5. Mr Boulanger, Jakarta
  6. Potion 77, Jakarta
  7. Santa Koes, South Tangerang
  8. What Ceti Does (Ceti History), Bogor

The three Indonesian film practitioners who will be the judges in the competition are:

  • Kamila Andini, director of “Sekala Niskala”, award winner Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury in the Berlinale International Film Festival 2018 and also graduated from Berlinale Talents 2018
  • Yosep Anggi Noen, award-winning director of “The Sciences of Fictions Golden Leopard-Special Mention at the Locarno International Film Festival 2019
  • Edwin Nazir, producer of the film “The Science of Fictions” which was also selected to be screened at the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The presentation session of the 9 selected finalists at SFPP is open to the public and will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021, at 09.00 WIB.

“There are more and more conveniences for making films, there are film funding competitions, workshops, and new, more friendly technologies,” he said Yosep Anggi Noen. “The challenge is to create new stories that are more sensitive to the times and to elaborate on the various ways of speaking in Indonesian short films,” he added.

Ahead of the festival, EOS has held a number of Instagram Live discussions as part of the “Road to EOS 2021” by bringing together a number of Indonesian film industry practitioners and programmers from film festivals in Europe for their experiences in the international film industry.
