“A squad that is considered better than Real Madrid and Barcelona.”

1NEWS – Diego Simeone has been coach of Atletico Madrid for several seasons. The Argentine passport coach arrived in Madrid in December 2011 and has made a lot of breakthroughs since then.

However, in terms of squad composition, Simeone admitted that he had never had a squad with such good quality as it is today. The 51-year-old coach assessed that he was a little confused by the existence of his protege.

At Atletico, Simeone has coached several big names back and forth. Call it Fernando Torres, Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, and many more.

For a careful tactician, the number of star players is not entirely profitable. Simeone has always interpreted the many star players as a challenge. That way, he became more serious in training.

In addition to players like Rodrigo de Paul, Matheus Cunha, and Antoine Griezmann who will be relied on throughout this season. Simeone will maximize the competition between his players at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Perhaps, the starting position will be reserved for them, but the squad will give them a chance to compete in case of injury.

However, having a large collection of stars gives Simeone a new job to do. On the other hand, it provides space for the players to rest. That is if Simeone easily and quickly determines who he chooses to play in each match. Selecting players with high capacity is certainly a new challenge for Simeone.

Here are some additional challenges for Simeone.

Motivate the players

This season Simeone has a squad of 22 players, although that number could be reduced by removing Benjamin Lecomte (reserve goalkeeper) and Ivan Saponjic, who were not the players he had planned. In addition, Renan Lodi and Sime Vrsaljko will likely find it difficult to get playing time this season.

That means there are 17 players who will start every game this season. Of course that’s impossible, and Simeone will have to keep his players happy and motivated to play in order to know one of them can make progress until the end of the season.

Managing pressure

Atletico Madrid are the reigning champions and have great players. At some point in their career, and have cost 100 million euros or more. However, Simeone will have a difficult time because it may be the first time that Atletico have a better squad than Real Madrid and Barcelona. Of course it will bring pressure.

Just being the reigning champion is already a lot of pressure there, and now it can increase tenfold.

Star on the bench

It would be rare to see a duo between Joao Felix, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann on the pitch together. One of the three must start from the bench. It can cause jealousy between them. By carrying the name as a star, it makes it seem like he doesn’t deserve to be on the bench.

Managing midfielders

Koke is a midfielder without a substitute at Atletico. That means there are two spots up for grabs every week. Meanwhile Marcos Llorente and Thomas Lemar have been quite impressive in the last two years.

However, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Rodrigo de Paul have also started the season well. While Hector Herrera has also shown good performances when given the opportunity to play. They have a lot to offer.

Justice for Correa

In addition to the three stars already mentioned above. At Atletico’s front line there is Angel Correa’s name. Despite being the lowest-profile striker, but perhaps the most effective Atletico have. He will take advantage of every opportunity and will not easily be knocked out of the main squad. Of course this is also a consideration for Simeone, between Correa and the three mega-star duo.
