1NEWS – Egyptian and Palestinian sources said on Sunday (5/9) that Cairo is putting great pressure on Hamas and Israel to reach a prisoner swap deal.

Egypt hopes that such a deal will pave the way for a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the sources said.

Unconfirmed reports in a number of Palestinian and Egyptian media have claimed over the past few days that some progress has been made towards achieving a prisoner swap.

Hamas has detained the bodies of IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, who died in the 2014 war with Israel.

In addition to this, there are two Israeli nationals, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who crossed into the Gaza Strip of their own accord in 2014 and 2105, respectively.

According to the report, Israel’s recent easing of restrictions on Gaza is aimed at facilitating Egypt’s mission of securing a prisoner swap deal and reaching a long-term ceasefire.

The Palestinian daily Al-Quds reported that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was personally involved in contacts to reach a Hamas-Israel agreement.

“The coming days will probably see the development of the positions of Hamas and Israel towards taking confidence-building steps to move forward with a prisoner swap deal in several stages,” the newspaper said.
