Match Preview

Villarreal confirmed that they will compete in the group stages of the 2021/2022 Champions League after winning the Europa League last season, beating Manchester United on penalties in the final after the two teams drew 1-1 for 120 minutes.

Villarreal have previous experience reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, having reached the semi-finals in the 2005/2006 season and progressing to the quarter-finals three years later. This season, they have to compete with Manchester United and Young Boys for a ticket to the knockout phase of the competition.

Atalanta, meanwhile, returned from the international break with a disappointing result, losing 2-1 at home to Fiorentina as Dusan Vlahovic’s brace was only met by a Duvan Zapata penalty. They now have just four points from three games.

They were outstanding last season, finishing third in Serie A and also reaching the Coppa Italia final to take them through to the Champions League group stage for the third season in a row.

La Dea have never faced Villarreal, and they have actually only faced opponents from Spain on four previous occasions, losing the two-legged encounter against Real Madrid in the Champions League last season but beating Valencia in the last 16 of the 2019/20 Europa League.

Meeting Record

As mentioned earlier, this will be the first competitive meeting between the two teams.
