“Then who else besides Lewandowski & Suarez?”

1NEWS – On Wednesday morning (15/9/2021), Cristiano Ronaldo will make his second Champions League debut with Manchester United.

The Portugal captain will play an important role in the Red Devils’ away group game against Young Boys in Switzerland.

Of course we all hope that Ronaldo will again set a sweet record in the Champions League this season, because as we all know the 36-year-old makes the most prestigious competition in the blue continent his ‘Playground’.

At Real Madrid, CR7 successfully lifted the ‘Big Eared’ trophy four times in five years. Ronaldo is also the all-time leading scorer of the competition with 134 goals in 176 appearances.

As well as being the most prolific goalscorer, Ronaldo holds the record for most assists in Champions League history with 42 assists from the group stages to the knockout stages. That means he averages one goal & one assist per game in the elite competition, a truly impressive record.

What makes CR7’s stats so impressive in the Champions League is the fact that he is so efficient and diligent in scoring goals in the knockout stages. Remarkably, the Sporting Lisbon academy graduate has contributed to 67 goals and 10 assists in the games played after the group stage, which is more than double that of any footballer.

Ranking of players with the most number of goals in the knockout phase

On that statistic, both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are in the lead, with La Pulga slightly outnumbered by goals, while Die Roten veteran Thomas Mueller is in the top three.

The image above was previously a list of the 20 most prolific players in the Champions League, and perhaps the most surprising name is Barcelona legend Dani Alves.

Despite operating as a full-back, the Brazilian still contributed to 18 goals in the Champions League knockout stages – something that is almost unbelievable.

Wayne Rooney leads the way among players who have tasted Premier League competition with Frank Lampard taking second place in that context.
