Jose Mourinho Satisfied Roma Defeat Zorya, But Still Disappointed Losing vs Lazio

Roma managed to bounce back from defeat in the capital derby against Lazio with a second successive European Conference League win against Zorya, only manager Jose Mourinho is still struggling to move on from the Derby della Capitale defeat.

Jose Mourinho saw a lot of positives from Roma’s landslide victory at home to Zorya with a score of 0-3 in the group stage of the European Conference League on Thursday (30/9) evening CEST, but still feels bitter about the defeat to Lazio.

Coming from a 3-2 loss to Lazio in Serie, Giallorossi rampaged to maintain their 100 per cent winning record in the European Conference League by beating Zorya Luhask by three goals without reply in Ukraine.

Stephan El Shaarawy opened the scoring in the 7th minute before former Premier League duo Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham extended their side’s lead in the second half in just two minutes.

Jose Mourinho said he was happy with his side’s win over Zorya, but is still complaining about their loss against Lazio, telling Italian Skysports, “I like the result, that’s what matters in the end. A few days ago we were dominant (against Lazio) but we lost. Tonight we won and that’s all that matters. We need another five or six points to secure qualification. A lot of players had to rest, we didn’t have any new injuries, so that’s all positive.”

The Portuguese tactician made some surprising decisions in his side’s selection of the starting XI against Zorya including making a first appearance for Ebrima Darboe, but the youngster managed to repay his manager’s trust with an assist for Stephan El Shaarawy and several other fine passes.

“Darboe played very well. He gives balance to the team and is good in possession. I also like his defensive moves. I wanted to give Amadou Diawara a chance to play in the second half too.”
