“A surprising call-up given Gavi’s age and Barcelona’s form at the start of the season.”

1NEWS – Pablo Martín Páez Gavira aka Gavi really stole the attention of the coach of the Spanish national team, Luis Enrique. At the age of 17 years and 55 days and having only played six times for the club at senior level, he earned a call-up to La Furia Roja.

The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) has announced the squad for next week’s UEFA Nations League. Unai Simon, Robert Sanchez and David de Gea were in goal. Then, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro Porro, Eric Garcia, Aymeric Laporte, Inigo Martínez, Pau Torres, Sergio Reguilon and Marcos Alonso at defender.

For the midfield there are Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Pedri, Mikel Merino, Koke and Gavi. Furthermore, Ferran Torres, Pablo Sarabia, Mikel Oyarzabal, Jose Fornals, Marcos Llorente, and Yeremi Pino as attackers.

Of course, of the names Enrique calls out, the most interesting is Gavi. However, the young Barcelona player is not the only one. Villarreal’s 18-year-old winger, Yeremi Pino, was also selected for the first time.

But, Gavi’s summons is worth highlighting. The La Masia graduate, who is considered a resemblance to Xavi Hernandez, is really still green. He has only made six appearances for Barcelona to date. In fact, his competitive debut only occurred on August 29, 2021. He was immediately promoted from Spain U-16 to the first team.

If he plays in the Nations League semi-final against Italy on Wednesday (6/9/2021), Gavi will become the youngest player to represent Spain.

Pablo Zubieta, who earned two caps in 1936, currently holds that record. Gavi’s club mate, Ansu Fati, sits second on the list as the only player to make his debut at the age of 17.

“He surprised me. But I know him from the Barcelona youth team and have no doubts about the performances he can give in the future,” Enrique said at a press conference session, reported by Marca.

“For me, the fact that a player is injured means I can see other people. With a tight calendar these things happen and opportunities happen. He is a very stylish interior, both with and without the ball, and contributes a lot, ” added the former Barcelona coach.

Enrique also admitted that he would actually call Fati who is slowly returning from a long break due to a knee injury. But, after getting advice from the Barcelona coaching team, he postponed it to give Fati a chance to be 100% fit.

“The first thing is it’s nice to see him back. I wanted to call him and take him, even if it wasn’t to play, just to be there. But, you have to put in the context where he came from, how many months he’s been out. We’ve decided it’s better not to bring him in. so that he can recover well with his club,” said Enrique.

If in the semifinal match they are able to beat Italy at the San Siro Stadium, Spain will appear in the Nations League final. Against Belgium or France. If they lose, they will fight for third place.
