1NEWS – Georgia was suddenly excited. Former President Mikhail Saakashvili was humiliated by handcuffs and taken to prison. His authority was really taken away.

Georgia’s incumbent president, Salome Zourabichvili, has ruled out the possibility of pardoning his controversial predecessor.

“Everyone is equal before the law. Many people have asked whether the president will pardon Saakashvili, the answer is simple, no, never,” he stressed during a press conference Friday night (1/10/2021).

He added that forgiving politicians was unfair to the people who suffered because of his regime.

Meanwhile, Saakashvili is reported to have responded to the arrests by declaring a hunger strike.

Prosecutors said Saakashvili would face up to six years in prison for his crimes.

The former president returned to his home country on Friday (1/10/2021).

The politician who left Georgia in 2013 has been the subject of several criminal cases in his alleged abuse of power, including a crackdown on the opposition.
