1NEWS, The young Indonesian tennis player who has been pacing around in international tournaments, Priska Madelyn Nugroho, made her debut at PON Papua 2021. Representing the home team, the 18-year-old player was also able to show a slick performance.

Priska Madelyn Nugroho is one of the young athletes who participated in enlivening the 2021 Papua PON, after a policy emerged that no longer limited the minimum age for potential participants for tennis.

This sport is also known to have started before the official opening of the Papua PON, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday (02/10/21) this afternoon.

The tennis schedule itself opened on September 26 and will end on October 7 next.

Priska was very happy to be able to participate as a representative of the Papua team. Although she did not win a medal, she was able to bring her team to the semifinals of the women’s team which was held on Thursday (30/9). Papua’s move was stopped in the top four after being crushed by representatives of East Java (Jatim) who then met DKI Jakarta in the final.

In the semifinal match, Priska Madelyn Nugroho was given the opportunity to appear as the second single. The results did not disappoint. The Australian Open Junior 2020 winner managed to beat his senior, Jessy Rompies with a final score of 7-5, 6-2.

East Java, which led by Aldila Sutjiadi’s victory, finally had to play doubles. Aldila went back down with his partner, Beatrice Gumulya, against the couple Priska Madelyn Nugroho/Septian Nur Zahiroh.

Unfortunately, the advantage ultimately belongs to East Java and they are entitled to a ticket to the final which is scheduled to take place on October 3, 2021.

Apart from that, Priska’s slick debut at PON Papua could be a sign that it is time for young tennis players to show off at the national event, especially those who are under 21 years of age.

Already Many Achievements

On the other hand, Priska Madelyn Nugroho finally felt how it felt for the first time to act in a multi-event event such as PON.

Previously, this 18-year-old tennis player has often made achievements in international tournaments, including participating in Wimbledon Junior 2021.

Appearing as the 11th seed, Priska was finally defeated by the Italian representative, Matilde Paoletti, through a game in straight sets 6-6, 3-6, Thursday (08/07/21).

Not only that, Priska also had time to make Indonesia proud when paired with Japanese tennis player, Naho Sato.

This pair is known to have beaten Vitoria Dema (Ukraine)/Ani Vangelova (Bulgaria) 6-0, 6-1 and won the women’s doubles title at the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 Frederiksberg in Denmark in August 2021.

This success was also a surprise at the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 Denmark, considering that the opponents faced by Priska and Sato were the third seeds in this tournament. Meanwhile, both are non-seeded.

In addition, this is also the first trophy that Priska has won since trying out the pro sector. Previously at the junior level, her best achievement was winning the 2020 Australian Open Junior women’s doubles with Filipino player, Alexandra Eala. After competing in Denmark, Priska continued her tour to Germany and Austria, then returned to Indonesia to take part in the XX Papua PON.

Now that she has set foot on the PON stage, it is certainly worth waiting for what Priska’s actions will look like in the next tournaments.

Do not miss the sport of Indonesian tennis with its young seeds who could be the successors of Aldila Sutjiadi, Christopher Rungkat, Beatrice Gumulya, Angelique Widjaja, or Yayuk Basuki.[]
