IMDb TV is reportedly developing a reboot of the film Cruel Intentions with a more modern depiction of the cult classic story in the form of a television series.

The reboot project will reportedly take place in Washington, DC, and the script will be handled by writing duo Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman. According to Deadline, the new version will still be based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses written by Choderlos de Laclos, and will still feature two violent half-sisters in their quest to stay at the top of their social circle.

According to the report the project will focus on the hierarchies found in their lives at Washington, DC’s elite colleges. “After a brutal hazing incident that threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they will do whatever it takes to maintain their power and reputation—even seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.”

Cruel Intentions – 1999

As we know, movies Cruel Intentions — released in 1999 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as half-brothers Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont, who bet on Sebastian’s ability to seduce Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of the principal at an elite New York school.

This project is one of the latest attempts to adapt the story Cruel Intentions. Previously, NBC had given the green light to pilot a new series with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar as its star in 2016, but it was later canceled as a full-length series. Fox had also tried a prequel series, but it was canceled before airing so that three episodes of the show were turned into a direct-to-video film with the title Cruel Intentions 2 in 2001, which was followed by another sequel, Cruel Intentions 3, in 2004.

The series will also be one of the latest series adaptation projects of a film currently in the works on IMDb TV, which is backed by Amazon. This streamer is also developing a serial version Lords of Dogtown. IMDb TV will also be the home of the spin-off series Bosch, and they are currently broadcasting a series Leverage.
