1NEWS, Member of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Guspardi Gaus, advised the government, especially the Ministry of Home Affairs, to consider the vacancy of the term of office of regional heads starting in 2022 because there will be simultaneous elections in 2024.
He said that one option is to extend the term of office of regional heads which will expire in 2022 and 2023.
“This input should be a thought for the government, especially the Minister of Home Affairs to address the vacancies of regional heads that occur in 2022 and 2023,” said Guspardi in a written statement, Wednesday (6/10/2021).
According to him, in the absence of changes to the Election Law (UU) and the Pilkada, two democratic events, namely the General Election (Pileg and Pilpres) Pilkada will be held simultaneously in 2024.
“Ahead of the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada, there will be 272 regional heads whose regional heads will be appointed by the executor of the task or Plt. Of which 101 regional heads whose term of office ends in 2022 and 171 regional heads will end their term of service in 2023,” said the PAN politician.
Guspardi realized that there was no rule to extend the term of office of regional heads. However, Guspardi continued, the option to extend the term of office of regional heads could become a discourse for the government.
“One of them, if it is necessary, the government can issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) to regulate the extension of regional heads. Considering the vacancies of regional heads are very large and the time is also quite long,” he explained.
Therefore, Guspardi asked the government if it was best that the Perppu should be issued why not. For the sake of the interests of the nation and state and the continuity of government in the future.
“Where the term of office is a long period that has never happened so far in very large numbers,” he concluded.
It is known that previously the former Director General of Regional Autonomy (Otda) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Djohermansyah Johan, proposed that the term of office of regional heads be extended. This is considered to be the best solution. This is because 271 regions will experience a leadership vacuum before the 2024 general election.
“I have a concept, just extend the term of office of the current Regional Head,” said Djohermansyah, Monday (4/10/2021).
