“Number 3 now plays in Hungary.”

1NEWS – Mohamed Salah’s form at Liverpool regularly raises the question, should Chelsea keep the striker? However, sometimes a change of atmosphere is what a player needs to develop.

There is no evidence that the Egyptian is at home at Stamford Bridge, which will make him one of the best in the world in 2021. His success on Merseyside has come after a stint in Italy.

However, this makes us think about the fate of several other players who left at the same time as Salah. Chelsea didn’t suffer right away, as they won the league in 2016/2017 after Salah’s exit. The moment coincided with the arrival of N’Golo Kante and Marcos Alonso.

But what happened to the other players who moved in that summer?

#1 Papy Djilobodji

After failing to break into the Chelsea first team, Djilobodji was given the opportunity for David Moyes to play in the Premier League with Sunderland.

Unfortunately, the Senegal international was loaned out the following summer before being relegated again. Moments followed by his dismissal in 2018 for breach of contract.

After playing in France with Guingamp, playing only a few games as they were relegated from Ligue 1, he then moved to Gaziantep in Turkey. He remains there to this day.

#2 Pepper Stipe

Croatian striker Perica was part of a cast that was often loaned out during his time in London. He spent time in the Netherlands and Italy without playing competitively with the Blues.

His loan move to Udinese was made permanent in 2016, but he left the Serie A club to join Watford last year after several loan spells.

He briefly scored one goal for Watford as they won promotion last season, albeit only as a substitute.

The 26-year-old moved again this summer. He joined Israeli club Maccabi Tel-Aviv and has scored three goals in his first seven games.

#3 Marko Marin

Signed on the same day as Eden Hazard, Marin was left out of the first team for losing out to the Belgian. Marin ended up leaving Chelsea with one goal to his name, although he was an unused substitute for the 2013 Europa League final victory.

The Germany international then appeared for Red Star Belgrade, starting the win over Liverpool in the Champions League group stage in 2018. He also played for the Serbian side in the loss to Tottenham in 2019.

He was in Hungary at the start of the 2021/2022 season after joining Ferencvaros in the summer. Marin made his debut off the bench in early October.

#4 John Swift

Swift made just one senior appearance for Chelsea, coming on as a substitute for Eden Hazard at the end of the 2013/2014 season. He eventually left after a loan spell at Brentford in 2016.

However, his permanent departure did not make Swift join The Bees. Instead, the goalscoring midfielder joined Reading which was then managed by Jaap Stam. He still lives at the Madejski Stadium, though the coaches come and go.

Swift, who hasn’t hit double figures in a season, has a great chance of doing so this season. He scored seven goals in the first 11 games of the season, including his third in a 3-3 draw with QPR.

#5 Reece Mitchell

Another academy talent, Mitchell, left for Chesterfield in 2016. The young winger struggled for some time after they were relegated to League Two at the end of his first season.

He spent some time non-league, mostly featuring for clubs in and around London before trying his luck in Belgium with lower league side KVK Westhoek.

Mitchell left Belgium in the summer, and is now reportedly yet to find a new club.

#Juan Cuadrado

A number of other players left Chelsea on loan that summer, with several of them settling permanently shortly thereafter.

Juan Cuadrado’s loan to Juventus became permanent in the summer of 2017, as did Nathan Ake’s temporary move to Bournemouth. While Patrick Bamford, who was loaned out to Burnley for the first half of the season, joined Middlesbrough mid-season.

While not all of them took the same route, all three did quite well having opted to leave Stamford Bridge shortly after Salah’s departure.
