Luis Enrique confirms Spain will be ambitious to beat Italy in the semifinals

Luis Enrique insists Spain will be ambitious and try to win against Italy in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals, but has criticized the media for criticizing his selection, including not calling up any Real Madrid players.

Spain will face hosts Italy in the semifinals of the UEFA Nations League on Thursday (7/10) CET at the San Siro, while the other top four will pit Belgium against world champions France.

However, ahead of this meeting in Milan, Luis Enrique seemed annoyed when he replied to comments from journalists from his country who questioned his selection of players including not bringing the classic number 9 striker type and not bringing players from Real Madrid.

“There are always six or seven strikers in the squad, players who can be used in the middle or on the wings. I’m a very attacking-minded coach and this has always been our goal,” he said. “To be honest, I don’t care about your comments and don’t need to read the media coverage. I know football much better than you.”

This UEFA Nations League semifinal meeting will be the first meeting between Spain and Italy since Euro 2020, when La Roja removed Gli Azzurri in the semifinals via penalty shootout after the two teams drew 1-1 for 120 minutes of the match.

Asked if the current Spanish national team had a better squad than Roberto Mancini’s side, the former AS Roma boss replied, “I don’t know, as usual I will be ambitious and try to win games from the start. My staff and I reflect on the situation, it’s true we lost a lot of players, but we are positive that we have so many talented players ready to represent Spain.”
