Uruguay vs Colombia Prediction, 2022 World Cup Qualification, Friday 8 October 2021

Engaged in the battle for one of the two possible spots remaining after Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia will face each other at Parque Central on Friday (8/10) morning CEST.

Uruguay are currently third in the table with 15 points from nine games, while Colombia are two places behind the hosts with two points less.

Match Preview

It could be argued that September was Uruguay’s best time in their struggle for the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers in the Conmebol zone, picking up seven points from a possible nine to cement them in third place.

After being held 1-1 at home to Peru, Uruguay then won 4-2 at home to Bolovia which closed with a 1-0 win over Ecuador. Amazingly, they got the positive results without their two star strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

Beating Chile in Barranquilla last month marked the first win in four qualifying matches for Colombia, as Miguel Borja’s brace in the first 20 minutes of the game and Luis Diaz’s added second-half goal saw them beat their visitors 3-1 at the Roberto Melendez Stadium.

Prior to that win, they had three consecutive draws against Argentina (2-2), Bolivia (1-1), and Paraguay (1-1). They are currently in fifth place in the Conmebol zone standings with three wins, four draws and two losses from nine matches.

Meeting Record

In the last 16 meetings, Uruguay has won with eight wins, four for Colombia, and the other four ending in a draw. The two teams last met in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Copa America, when the match ended in a 0-0 draw before Colombia won 2-4 on penalties.

Team News

Uruguay will be boosted by the return of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, who missed September unscathed. Maxi Gomez has been left out of the squad.

Miguel Borja, who scored twice in the last win against Chile, missed this game through injury, but all the other players will be available for selection for Colombia.

Player Estimate

Uruguay XI (4-3-1-2): Fernando Muslera; Nahitan Nández, José Gimenez, Diego Godín, Joaquín Piquerez; Federico Valverde, Matias Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur; Giorgian De Arrascaeta; Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez

Colombia XI (4-4-2): David Ospina; Daniel Munoz, Oscar Murillo, Davinson Sanchez, William Tesillo; Juan Cuadrado, Wilmar Barrios, Gustavo Cuellar, Luis Diaz; Roger Martinez, Radamel Falcao

Uruguay got a big boost with the return of their two leading goalscorers in history in Luis Suarez (55) and Edinson Cavani (46), who missed last September through injury, although it is fair to say that his successor has done an excellent job.

Colombia are certainly a good team and they have shown since the 2021 Copa America, including beating Uruguay on penalties. The hosts are slightly underdogs here, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this match ends in a draw,

Score Prediction: Uruguay 1-1 Colombia
