The World Health Organization (WHO) said that it had started shipping Covid-19 medical supplies to North Korea via the Chinese port of Dalian.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported on Thursday (7/10/2021) that the shipment of medical supplies raised the possibility of North Korea loosening long-standing strict border controls amid the global pandemic.

North Korea has tightened border controls since the outbreak of Covid-19 in China, signaling that key materials and medical supplies cannot be sent to North Korea.

North Korea briefly closed a major shipping route linking Dalian to the western port of Nampo as it raised its anti-epidemic state of emergency to the highest level.

“In order to support North Korea with essential Covid-19 medical supplies, WHO started shipping via Dalian,” the WHO said in its weekly report on the situation on infections and precautions in the world.

Given that the report provides an updated situation from September 20-26, the deliveries appear to have started late last month.

However, the report did not specify when and what types of medical supplies the WHO sent to North Korea.
