1NEWS, Stefanos Tsitsipas has finally won his first trophy of the season. The success was obtained after the third seed won over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 2022.

In the final match in Monte Carlo, Sunday (17/4/2022) evening WIB, Tsitsipas defended his title after defeating Fokina in straight sets with a score of 6-3 and 7-6.

“I’m very proud of the confidence I put in my game. Sometimes you doubt yourself, but it’s always important to keep your head high.”

The Greek, appearing in her fourth final at this level, hit a forehand with great topspin and accuracy and came back from a serve failure at 5-4 in the second set to claim her first trophy of the season. Tsitsipas also praised his opponent’s performance.

“He fought in moments I didn’t expect him to fight. He can hit incredible winners out of nowhere and play unexpectedly. But I can minimize that. I knew he would be a dangerous opponent but it was a big win for me. I think we will see good results from him in the future.”

After a battle of one hour and 34 minutes, Tsitsipas became the sixth player to win consecutive Monte Carlo titles in the Open Era alongside Rafael Nadal (2005-12, 2016-18), Juan Carlos Ferrero (2002-03), Thomas Muster (1995) -96), Bjorn Borg (1979-1980), and Ilie Nastase (1971-1973).

With the win, the 23-year-old tennis player, who beat Andrey Rublev in the championship match in Monte Carlo last season, will move up to 2nd place in Monday’s ATP Race To Turin. The Greek has now won eight tour-level trophies, with four of them on clay.[]
