Persipura were relegated to the 2022 Indonesian Liga 2 because they were only ranked 16th in the 2021-2022 Liga 1 standings.
In the last week of the Indonesian League 1, Persipura could actually have survived relegation if Persipura had won the final match, then Barito Putera lost and so did PSS.
Persipura won 3-0 over Persita in the last match, but PSS won 2-0 over Persija and Barito Putera drew 1-1 with Persib.
It was the 1-1 draw between Persib and Barito Putera that some parties disputed because they thought Persib should have won if David Da Silva could have scored from the penalty spot in the 57th minute.
