1NEWS – Erik ten Hag has officially become the new manager of Manchester United, and will begin actively taking charge of the dressing room in June.

There has been much speculation in recent weeks that Ten Hag will become the first permanent boss at Old Trafford since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November.

But the Ajax manager remains focused on the work at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

And on this Thursday (21/04/2022), the Red Devils team who had just lost to Liverpool earlier this week, finally announced their new boss.

The club’s director of football, John Murtough, said in a statement on the club’s website, “Over the past four years at Ajax, Erik has established himself as one of the most attractive and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his attractive, attacking team. football and a commitment to youth.”

“In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were very impressed with his long-term vision to return Manchester United to the level we want to compete at, and his drive and determination to achieve that.”

“We wish Erik the best as he is focused on achieving a successful end to the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”

The 52-year-old has won the league title twice in Holland and is currently bidding to win the Eredivisie for a third time, with his side four points clear of rivals PSV with just five games remaining this season.

Ajax did lose to PSV in the KNVB Cup final at the weekend, ending their chances of a double winner this season, but their time in Amsterdam was certainly a success.

About his new job, Ten Hag said, “It is a great honor to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am very excited about the challenge ahead.”

“I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of giving them the success they deserve.”

“It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my full commitment and focus to bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.”

United have not won a trophy since the Europa League in 2017, when Jose Mourinho’s side beat Ajax in the Europa League final.

The 13-time Premier League winner has also not won a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho and Solskjaer have all tried and failed while Rangnick has not been able to make any significant changes to the team.

One player in particular who should be happy with Ten Hag’s appointment is Donny van de Beek, who joined the club in August 2020.

The Dutch midfielder has not been given much opportunity at Old Trafford, and is currently on loan at Everton, but he was part of the new manager’s team when Ajax reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
