The Indonesian Chess Team Opens the Struggle in Hanoi with Maximum Results

1NEWS, The Indonesian chess team recorded positive results on the first day of competition at the SEA Games Hanoi 2021. The Red and White male and female athletes were able to perform optimally in the first two rounds of classical chess numbers on Tuesday (10/5).

In the competition which took place at the Quan Ninh Exhibition Center, Women International Master (WIM) Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra started her career by winning a duel between Indonesian chess players against International Master (IM) Irene Kharisma Sukandar in the morning session.

In the afternoon session, the two women’s chess players from Indonesia competed again. As a result, they managed to pack a victory over their respective opponents in the second round. WIM Citra beat Malaysian chess players, WFM Tan Li Ting and IM Irene won the duel against WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronds (Philippines).

“WIM Citra’s second win in the afternoon was scored through an exciting and open battle with both parties having the opportunity to win. However, it is Citra who is much more experienced, who is finally able to take full advantage of the situation,” said the Head Coach of the Indonesian Chess National Team, Kristianus Liem in a written statement, Tuesday (10/5).

“Meanwhile, IM Irene Kharisma Sukandar defeated WIM Philippines chess player Jan Jodilyn Fronds in the second round.”

Furthermore, both WIM Citra and IM Irene will again compete in classical chess on Wednesday (11/5). This time, Irene will meet the Filipino chess player, WGM Janelle Mae Frayna, while Citra will meet the host chess player, WGM Vo Thi Kim Phung.

Not only women, the Indonesian men’s team also got maximum results for classical chess numbers. One of them is Grand Master Novendra Priasmoro, who successfully won two consecutive wins on the opening day.

“Novendra is showing his class as a GM. He has beaten his opponent FM Lye Like Zang from Malaysia twice in a row and second seed GM Tran Tuan Minh from Vietnam,” added Kristianus Liem.

There is also IM Mohamad Ervan who is undefeated. He was recorded as being able to pack one win against IM Wynn Zaw Htun (Myanmar) and a draw against GM John Paul Gomez (Philippines).

Thanks to these results, GM Novendra and IM Ervan have the right to advance to the third round. They are also scheduled to compete on Wednesday (11/5), with Novendra meeting the first seed GM Ngoc Truong Son, and IM Ervan against IM Tin Jingyao from Singapore.[]
