Capello reveals his team AS Roma almost got Chiellini before being snatched by Juventus

Giorgio Chiellini could have had a different career path as Fabio Capello revealed that the Italian defender could have ended up at AS Roma in the past.

Crazy Ball – Fabio Capello has revealed his team AS Roma were close to signing for Giorgio Chiellini, but Juventus stepped in and concluded the deal quickly.

The veteran Italian defender plays his last home game for Bianconeri after 17 years at the club in which he won nine Serie A titles, playing a total of 560 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Actually his contract is still valid until June 30, 2023, but with Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, he ended his contract at Juventus early and has been heavily linked with a potential move to MLS.

Fabio Capello, meanwhile, coached Giorgio Chiellini during his first season with The Old Lady in the 2005/2006 season but says he almost signed him early at AS Roma.

“Chiellini should have joined Roma when I was coaching them,” Fabio Capello told Sky Sports after Juventus’ last home game against Lazio in Serie A at the weekend, with him working as a pundit.

“He played the reserve team game against Roma with Livorno. I went to watch it and I saw it as a Roma player. But [Luciano] Moggi moved much faster and brought him to Juventus.”

Actually, Giorgio Chiellini had spent time with AS Roma at youth level but started his professional career with Livorno in 2000. He then played for one season at Fiorentina in 2004/2005 before being recruited by Juventus in the summer of 2005 in a transfer deal worth IDR 133 billion.
