The KKN film in Penari Village is the best-selling Indonesian horror film, because it has reached nearly 6 million viewers since its release on April 30, 2022. KKN in Penari Village is believed to be based on a true story told by a netizen on Twitter nicknamed @simpleman or SimpleMan. He retold the story of the two students who did the KKN.

The names and locations of the incident have been changed to honor the KKN members who died. Overview of KKN in Dancer Village

According to SimpleMan via thread Twitter that boom in 2019, the story of KKN in the Dancer Village was told directly by Nur and Widya. The two of them are 2 of 6 students who do KKN in Dancer Village. The other members are Ayu, Bima, Wahyu, and Anton. Dancer Village is the only settlement in the middle of the forest. The journey to the village can only be reached by motorbike.

The Dancer Village is guarded by Badarawuhi, a ghost in the form of a dancer with a green scarf. Badarawuhi targeted Widya to be his successor, but in the end Ayu replaced him. The reason is that Ayu and Bima have sexual relations in Tapak Tilas, an area that humans are not allowed to enter. Until finally, Ayu and Bima died.

Alas Gumitir

Actually, netizens who are curious about the location of KKN in Dancer Village have been around since thread SimpleMan trending in twitter. SimpleMan only mentions that the location of KKN in Penari Village is City “B” in the eastern part of Java Island. At that time, many suspected that the location in question was Banyuwangi. With various clues, netizens concluded that the original location of KKN in Penari Village was Alas Gumitir.

In Banyuwangi there are two pedestals or forests, namely Alas Gumitir and Alas Purwo. The inhabited forest is Alas Gumitir. This can be seen from Google Earth which shows that there are settlements in the middle of Alas Gumitir. Then, there are also places like Tapak Tilas and the building in the opposite direction which is thought to be a tomb.

Rowo Bayu Village

Recently, a video circulated of Erick Thohir’s interview with Sudirman, the manager and guard of Rowo Bayu, Songgon District, Banyuwangi Regency. It is predicted that Rowo Bayu is the original location of the KKN incident in the Dancer Village. However, Sudirman’s story is different from thread SimpleMan. According to Sudirman, in 2008 6 students from a campus in Surabaya did KKN in Rowo Bayu Village.

Two of the 6 members fell in love. One day, they explored Rowo Bayu Village but got lost. Until finally met someone who invited the two students to stop by the Dancer Village. The location of the Dancer Village is north of Rowo Bayu Village. They were both given food parcels wrapped in newspaper. Arriving at the post, they told other friends. However, the other friends did not believe it because there were no other villages in the area.

The two students also showed the gifts they brought. However, the newsprint wrapper had turned into taro leaves, while the contents were freshly cut monkey heads. The man fainted, until a few days later he died. Meanwhile, the woman died about a month later.

In the video uploaded to Erick Thohir’s Instagram, Sudirman also showed a photo of the location of the KKN incident in the Dancer Village. In fact, Sudirman and village managers around Rowo Bayu have made several KKN spots in Dancer Village a tourist attraction.

Although the original location of the KKN in Penari Village is thought to be in Banyuwangi, East Java, the shooting location is in Yogyakarta. The iconic bridge that connects the main road with the Dancer Village is the Plunyon Kalikuning Bridge. While some other locations are Batu Kapal Tourism Park in Bantul, Naggulan in Kulon Progo, Wanagama forest area in Gunung Kidul.

The reason is, he has promised Nur and Widya that if their story is published, the condition is that they disguise their identities such as name, alma mater, and the location of the incident.
