1NEWS, Deputy Chairman of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives Charles Honoris responded to the viral photo of Pika, a child with cerebral palsy with his mother expressing the aspiration to need medical marijuana for treatment during car free day in Jakarta.

Charles suggested that Indonesia should have started a study on the benefits of the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa) for medical purposes.

“This objective medical study will provide scientific legitimacy as to whether the medical cannabis program should be implemented in Indonesia,” Charles said in a written statement, Jakarta, Tuesday (28/6/2022).

Charles said that at the end of 2020 the United Nations Narcotics Commission (CND) had issued marijuana and cannabis resin from Group IV of the Single Convention on Narcotics of 1961. This means that marijuana has been removed from the list of the most dangerous drugs that have no medical benefit.

“On the contrary, this UN decision has prompted many countries to review their country’s policies regarding the use of the cannabis plant for medical treatment,” he explained.

According to Charles, in the world there are now more than 50 countries that already have medical marijuana programs, including neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand.

“Regardless of whether Indonesia will carry out a medical marijuana program or not, research is mandatory and very important to do so that it becomes the basis for policy making / drafting further regulations,” he said.

In addition, Charles also emphasized that medical research must continue to develop and be dynamic for humanitarian purposes. This was for him, in order to save the lives of Pika, and another child with encephalitis, which his mother believed could be treated with marijuana.

“The state can’t just sit idly by and watch other ‘Pika-Pika’ waiting for the fulfillment of their right to health,” concluded the PDI-P politician. []
