At the time, the former Slovakia international was one of a Liverpool squad going through a transition period, but he had always been a reliable player at the heart of defence.
Although Skrtel only managed to win one trophy during his spell at the Reds, namely the League Cup in 2012, but as a legend he still pays attention to his former club.
Although he will not be viewed as highly as Sadio Mane, the 37-year-old is a highly respected player among Liverpool fans and he clearly still has a lot of love for the club.
When interviewed by The Athletic newspaper, the Liverpool legend revealed the reason why Mane chose to leave Anfield.
“It’s difficult to leave a club like Liverpool because if you’re there, if you do well like he did, and we can call him a legend because of what he’s achieved at the club, it’s brilliant,” said Skrtel.
“But I think every player, at some stage in his career, has the feeling that you need to change. You need new motivation, new challenges. After eight and a half years (with Liverpool), I also had a feeling like, ‘Oh, maybe I have to change something’ to find a different experience.”
“I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an easy decision for him to leave the club. But he gave his maximum and did very well for the club and now all you can do is wish him luck. If they (Bayern Munich) play in the future against Liverpool, I hope he is not at his best!”
Mane enjoyed a very successful eight years at the club and his decision to leave will certainly not be easy to make. The Senegal international is one of Juergen Klopp’s main strikers, with Mane scoring 120 goals in 269 games for the Reds.
Mane also won the Champions League, Club World Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. Something that won’t be easy for him to find at his new club.
With his recent transfer to the Bundesliga champions, Mane will start a new chapter in his career. He will be hoping to have as much success as he has on Merseyside. And, if necessary go beyond that.
