Crazy Ball – Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed why he changed his jersey number from No 18 to No 8 ahead of the new season, saying it represented his historical past.
As we previously reported here that the Portugal international is changing to number 8 ahead of the new 2022/2023 season which he will start wearing on the pre-season tour The Red Devils this month, with that number now idle following the departure of Juan Mata on a free transfer.
Bruno Fernandes has previously worn the number 18 jersey at Old Trafford since his arrival from Sporting CP in January 2020 where he developed into one of the club’s best players, scoring 50 goals and providing 38 assists in 126 appearances across all competitions.
Having previously worn the No 18 jersey for United, the Portugal midfielder has now taken the No 8 jersey from the recently departed Juan Mata. The 27-year-old previously wore the number at Sporting CP and Udinese.
Now he has revealed the significance of the number, telling Manchester United’s official website, “That jersey number means a lot to me. There is history behind that number because my father, when he was a player, he played with the number eight.”
Bruno Fernandes later also discussed the sacrifices his father made to make his dream come true, adding, “He quit football because he had a job offer, and it was clear at that moment for me and my brothers and for all the family it was better that he had a decent job. instead of continuing to play football.”
“The number eight is the number he has used for two years. Because it was also his dream to be a footballer, it made my dream a little bit about him.”
